SAMURAI COTTON PROJECT

By about 1970 cotton production had effectively ceased as an industry in Japan, with 99.9% of all cotton being imported into the country. In 2008 Toru Nogami, founder of Samurai Jeans, began growing 100% Japanese cotton in Okayama Prefecture, later moving north to rural Hyogo Prefecture. This is the cotton found in this T-shirt.

The cotton grown at the Samurai Cotton Project plantation is short-staple which results in an extremely slubby handfeel for this tee. The cotton is totally organic - no pesticides or chemicals involved.

This T-shirt is entirely made in Japan - the cotton is from Sasayama, the sewing and dyeing is performed in Kyoto and the knitting in Wakayama.

A note on the Kuromame dye from Samurai: "The place where we grow our organic cotton is called Sasayama and it is also home to local black soybean production. We've used the juice of these black beans (which is normally just thrown away) as a natural dye, resulting in a very unique, organic, and eco-friendly colour."
